Purple items seemed to have replaced yellow items as the demarkation for "rare" items. These are items that are a cut above the normal drop table for whatever you're fighting, they'll yield more and better things when salvage, but they're not necessarily unidentified. They might not have any mods or upgrades and just have higher stats or lower requirments than normal.

While I'm at it, items with a blue name are those that are unidentified. Unless they're purple which seems to take precedence over the blue color.

While I do agree with you in your findings I found a yellow item earlier this morning that was called "rare" and yeilded a special haft when salvaged with an expert salvage kit.

I've found 2 purple unidentified items so far, but have no salvaged yet. Haven't seen a yellow...
